Atlanta, USA (CNN) – The commander of the US forces in the Middle East announced, on Wednesday, the reduction of the number of US forces in the country from 5,200 to 3,000 soldiers during the month of September.
“This reduction allows us to continue to advise and assist our Iraqi partners in uprooting the last roots of ISIS in Iraq and ensuring that they are defeated,” said US Central Command Commander Frank McKenzie.
McKenzie stressed that this decision embodies the confidence of the US administration in the ability of the Iraqi armed forces to carry out its tasks alone.
For his part, a senior US administration official told reporters on Tuesday that they should expect to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan within a few days.
It was expected that Washington would take the decision to withdraw some forces from Iraq, within the framework of the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s campaign promises in 2016, and this step would come as a support for him during the difficult electoral battle he is currently fighting.
It is noteworthy that America began withdrawing part of its forces from some bases in Iraq last March and handing over those bases to the Iraqi armed forces.
